I have to say that I felt it coming in the air tonight after listening to this conversation. There's a lot to unbox in this interview and I thank you both for sparking a number of ideas in my brain on where to take my newsletter to from here.
Yeah, my newsletter has evolved a bit in almost two years where now I have a weekly "product" that's basically me processing ideas that comes across my desk every week. So, what makes that unique is that if you like my point of view about things, then you may like my newsletter. So far, that has brought me mild success (numbers wise) but aside from that, I've been at it for almost two years which is the main thing I've gained from this exercise. I've developed my art.
I have a memoir already written that I could polish and try to sell in KDP eventually, and a second series of essays about food that I'm trying to find time to write, plus a couple other projects brewing.
It's more about creating than making money at this point, but thinking about someone Scoot mentioned that wrote for more than decade before he made any significant income gave me hope LOL. I know my writing is very niche and all over the place but now I have a number of pieces that I could cobble together into an anthology of sorts or expand on a short 500 word idea, who knows?
The Hellboy story was a good surprise. I like Guillermo Del Toro, not only because he's my compatriot, but because he makes monster stories appealing. And knowing that Mignola created from where his abilities were makes me think that I need to continue to write how I know to write and try to get better with time and maybe something will happen in the future where enough people will gain interest in my art form. Basically thinking of myself as an artist and doing it because it brings me enjoyment.
That's probably more than what you signed up for, but hey, you asked.
No. I really am interested and glad you replied. Check out my interview with Reid DeRamus. That’s where I discovered the Monopoly of You (which is what you are leaning into). We talk about it a little, but if you watch the interview that Reid did on his own show (it’s linked in my Story Notes) or just click on the article written by the guy who came up with Monopoly of You and get it straight from the source. That last one is probably the best choice. It’ll give you an expanded understanding of ideas we just mentioned in passing.
Thanks for the mention! I look forward to listening to the full episode as the quick flick through I made was so, so interesting. A great conversation, thank you.
Thanks for having me on, John! This was a fun interview and I really enjoyed the discussion. I hope everyone gets something helpful from this--we covered a lot of ground!
Hey Ulysses! Thanks for the comment. There are a couple of things this could be. Just before we started recording I was doing a sound check with Scoot and he felt like I was coming across as too loud. So, I lowered the gain on my mic. I probably lowered it too much. The other thing that it could be (if you were listening to the podcast) is that I was experimenting with some new editing software and might have screwed something up there. I don’t think I did, but have to admit that it’s a possibility.
To me it sounds like the sound is being recorded from two sources. Like your software is recording your input and Scoot's simultaneously. Sorry, don't mean to be a nitpicker. I was a musician for a long time so sometimes these details stick out for me.
It’s possible. I was using Zoom to record our call. I don’t think they offer controls that let me influence that, but I’ll look around. i’m also considering switching to something else.
I like this guy Scoot.
meh. he’s okay. 😁

It makes me so happy to know that it helped you. Are you able to share any of your ideas? It’s fine if you can’t.

Thank you for the mention! I’ll have to watch this today.
I hope you enjoy it.

Holly, thank you for the kind words. I hope you enjoy the full episode.
I’m looking forward to it! Just need a long walk or something when I can put the earphones in for 1hr 20!
Thanks for the shoutout!
Thanks for the great Twilight Zone talk. I am always up for that.
There is something pretty cool that came out of that chat. Coming in November. :)
intriguing.

You were a delight to talk to. I had a lot of fun.
You have a big mic in front of you but the sound seems to be picked up by the inbuilt laptop mic. I think there’s something that needs adjusting here.

Not using headphones can cause that echo.
Thank you, brother! I appreciate you.
Just trying to highlight people who are doing good work in interesting ways… and you are both of those.
