Dude. It’ll be two years in two months for my dad. Those phone calls got so hard. Like you, we talked everyday and I saw him at least once a month, even more towards the end. But he would call me. That was easier — because often when I called he couldn’t find the phone and it would frustrate him. But his calls got harder as dementia set in — he would be upset, paranoid and I would talk him down. Usually I could, but not always.
Early on I got him a pouch to wear around his neck that he could keep his phone and money in. He always wanted to have some cash even though there was nothing to spend it on. Then he told me he started having heart palpitations. So we went in to see his cardiologist. He was puzzled. The pacemaker was making its paces fine. Then he saw the phone holder. The phone was on vibrate. He laughed so hard (my dad that is).
Months after he died I would look at my phone after a workout to see if I’d missed any calls from him. Slowly, I realized I was relieved he wasn’t going to call me today, he wasn’t going to be upset today.
